MacBook Neo Shines, But Not Without Its Quirks
The buzz around Apple’s latest MacBook Neo is undeniable, and for good reason. After spending a week with the new machine, I can confidently say it’s a joy to use for everyday tasks. From web browsing to word processing and chatting, every interaction feels smooth and enjoyable. However, this polished experience isn’t without its hiccups, especially when it comes to connectivity and software installation.
Daily Driver Delight
For the vast majority of users who primarily use their laptops for common tasks like browsing the web, writing documents, or communicating, the MacBook Neo is an easy recommendation. The hardware itself is a pleasure to interact with. It’s refreshing to see a device that stands out with unique color options, breaking the mold of typical black and white tech gadgets.
Connectivity Challenges Emerge
The biggest hurdle I’ve encountered is the limitation on input/output (IO) ports. If you’re someone who rarely connects your laptop to external devices, the Neo might be perfect. But for those who rely on docking stations or multiple peripherals, be prepared for some potential frustrations. Even with a standard USB-C breakout box, I’ve experienced issues. The Neo struggles to drive my Dell 6K monitor at its native resolution, topping out at 4K. This would be less of a problem if macOS handled different aspect ratios better. Currently, the system’s native handling of non-16:9 displays is, frankly, unacceptable. It becomes even more confusing when trying to adjust resolution scaling, which macOS refers to as DPI settings. When connected to my ultrawide monitor, even after closing the laptop lid to force single-display use, I couldn’t find a single ultrawide resolution option. While a third-party tool called ‘Better Display’ exists, its complex interface made it difficult to figure out quickly.
Beyond display issues, I’ve also run into occasional Wi-Fi problems. It’s unclear if this is an issue with Apple’s Wi-Fi chip, my network hardware, or a combination of both. At times, streaming video from platforms like Frame.io and YouTube became impossible. The connection would drop, making even basic tasks incredibly annoying. These Wi-Fi glitches, while not constant, are disruptive.
Software Installation Woes
The process of installing applications on the MacBook Neo has also been a point of confusion. If an app isn’t in the App Store, the typical drag-and-drop method doesn’t always work as expected. Sometimes, you have to drag the application icon, hold it, and then place it into an open spot within the Applications folder for it to install. This extra step feels unnecessary, especially when you’ve already double-clicked the installer. There were also instances of ‘ghost loading,’ where launching an app resulted in nothing happening for a while, with no visual cues like a spinning cursor. Then, after an extended wait, the app would suddenly launch.
Furthermore, I was surprised by how many popular applications are missing from the official App Store. Major players like Discord and Microsoft Teams, which are readily available on other platforms, are nowhere to be found. This forces users back to the less intuitive manual installation process. It’s odd, especially when you consider that operating systems like Linux offer robust package managers for easy software installation.
Who Should Consider the MacBook Neo?
The MacBook Neo is an excellent choice for students, writers, and general users who prioritize a premium user experience for everyday computing. If your workflow involves primarily web browsing, document creation, and basic communication, and you don’t frequently connect to external displays or require extensive port access, this machine will likely exceed your expectations. Its sleek design and enjoyable interface make it a pleasure to use daily.

Creative professionals, developers, or anyone who relies heavily on multiple external monitors, high-speed data transfers, or a wide array of peripherals might encounter the IO limitations and display compatibility issues mentioned. Power users who frequently install software from various sources might also find the installation process and App Store limitations a bit cumbersome compared to other operating systems.
