Contrary to popular belief, artificial intelligence may not be the time-saving miracle worker many hoped for. Instead, a recent study suggests that AI tools are leading to an intensification of work, prompting employees to take on more tasks rather than reducing their workload.

Harvard Business Review Study Reveals AI’s Unexpected Impact

A comprehensive eight-month study conducted within a US-based technology company, involving approximately 200 employees, has shed new light on the real-world effects of AI adoption in the workplace. The findings, published in the Harvard Business Review, challenge the notion that AI primarily serves to automate tasks and free up employee time.

Researchers observed that the introduction of AI tools did not lead to a reduction in overall work hours. Instead, the nature of tasks evolved. Employees began to undertake work that they would have previously outsourced, deferred, or avoided altogether. This expansion of responsibilities meant that while individual tasks might have been completed more quickly thanks to AI assistance, the freed-up time was reallocated to new or previously neglected duties.

The ‘Task Stacking’ Phenomenon

The study identified a phenomenon dubbed ‘task stacking.’ As AI streamlined existing workflows, employees didn’t necessarily sign off early or take extended breaks. Instead, they filled the newly available time by adding more tasks to their schedules. This behavior was observed across various levels of the organization, indicating a systemic shift in how work is approached in an AI-augmented environment.

“Essentially, the work that they used to do took a lot less time. So instead of using that newfound time to work less, they just stacked additional tasks on their plate,” the report notes, highlighting a common practice among those deeply engaged with AI technologies.

AI Fosters a Multitasking, High-Speed Work Rhythm

Beyond simply increasing the volume of work, AI has also altered the pace and management of tasks. The study found that AI introduced a new work rhythm, compelling employees to manage multiple active threads of work simultaneously. This has led to an increase in multitasking as a standard operational mode.

This heightened multitasking and the efficiency gains from AI have, in turn, raised expectations for speed. While these expectations may not always stem from explicit demands from management, they emerge organically from the visible and normalized acceleration of work processes within the company. The constant exposure to faster workflows, facilitated by AI, has created an implicit pressure to perform at a higher velocity.

Why This Matters

The implications of this study are significant for both employees and employers. For employees, the promise of AI leading to more leisure time or a better work-life balance appears to be unfulfilled, at least in the short term. Instead, the current trajectory suggests that AI may lead to increased cognitive load and pressure to constantly perform at a higher capacity. This could have long-term consequences for employee well-being and job satisfaction if not managed proactively.

For employers, understanding this dynamic is crucial for strategic AI implementation. Simply deploying AI tools without considering their impact on workload distribution and employee expectations could inadvertently lead to burnout and decreased morale. Companies need to foster a culture that allows employees to genuinely benefit from AI’s efficiency gains, potentially by redefining productivity metrics, encouraging focused work periods, or explicitly allocating time for professional development and rest.

The study serves as a critical reminder that technological advancements, especially in AI, require careful consideration of their human and organizational impact. The goal of AI should be to augment human capabilities and improve overall work quality and efficiency, not merely to increase the quantity of tasks performed. As AI becomes more integrated into daily work, a conscious effort will be needed to ensure that it leads to a more sustainable and fulfilling work experience, rather than an unending cycle of intensified tasks.
