What You’ll Learn
- How to configure the Action Button on your iPhone.
- How to create a shortcut to launch ChatGPT.
- How to set the Action Button to initiate ChatGPT dictation for on-the-go use.
- An optional advanced tip for mapping Do Not Disturb to a Back Tap gesture.
Prerequisites
- An iPhone model with an Action Button (iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max).
- The ChatGPT app installed on your iPhone.
- The Shortcuts app installed on your iPhone (usually pre-installed).
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Access Action Button Settings
First, you need to locate the settings for the Action Button.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap on Action Button.
Step 2: Navigate to Shortcuts
Within the Action Button settings, you’ll find various options. We need to select the Shortcuts functionality.
- Scroll down the list of available actions until you find Shortcuts.
- Tap on Shortcuts to select it.
Step 3: Choose the ChatGPT Shortcut
Now, you’ll link the Action Button to your ChatGPT interaction. Instead of simply opening the app, we’ll configure it to start dictation, allowing for hands-free input.
- Tap the gear icon next to Shortcuts to configure it.
- In the search bar that appears, type ChatGPT.
- From the search results, select ChatGPT.
- You will see an option to either ‘Start a new chat’ or ‘Start dictation’. Choose Start dictation. This is a key step that enables you to speak your queries directly to ChatGPT.
Step 4: Test the Action Button
With the shortcut configured, it’s time to test if it works.
- Exit the Settings app.
- Press and hold the Action Button on the side of your iPhone.
- You should hear a prompt from ChatGPT, indicating it’s ready to listen to your dictation. Speak your query.
- After you finish speaking, you’ll have the opportunity to review and edit your prompt before sending it to ChatGPT.
Optional: Map Do Not Disturb to Back Tap
If you frequently use another function, like Do Not Disturb, you might want to retain quick access to it. The creator of this guide suggests mapping Do Not Disturb to a Back Tap gesture. This requires a bit more setup, as Do Not Disturb doesn’t have a direct Action Button integration within Shortcuts.
Step 1: Create a Do Not Disturb Shortcut
First, you need a shortcut that can toggle Do Not Disturb mode on and off.
- Open the Shortcuts app.
- Tap the + icon in the top right corner to create a new shortcut.
- Tap Add Action.
- In the search bar, type Do Not Disturb.
- Select Set Focus.
- Tap on ‘On’ and change it to Toggle. This will allow the shortcut to turn Do Not Disturb on if it’s off, and off if it’s on.
- Tap the downward arrow next to ‘Set Focus’ at the top.
- Tap Rename and name your shortcut something like “Toggle Do Not Disturb”.
- Tap Done.
Expert Note: Feel free to take a screenshot of the ‘Set Focus’ action configuration to ensure you copy it correctly.
Step 2: Configure Back Tap
Now, assign this new shortcut to your iPhone’s Back Tap feature.
- Go back to the Settings app.
- Scroll down and tap on Accessibility.
- Tap on Touch.
- Scroll all the way down and tap on Back Tap.
- Choose either Double Tap or Triple Tap.
- Scroll through the list of available actions and select the shortcut you just created (e.g., “Toggle Do Not Disturb”).
Now, a quick double or triple tap on the back of your iPhone will toggle your Do Not Disturb mode, while your Action Button remains dedicated to launching ChatGPT dictation.
