How to Understand the Epic Tale of ‘Legend of the Condor Heroes’

In the late 1950s, people in Hong Kong eagerly bought newspapers. Many weren’t just looking for the latest news.

They were following an exciting story set long ago. This tale was filled with adventure, war, romance, and betrayal.

From 1957 to 1959, Jin Yong wrote “Legend of the Condor Heroes.” It was the first book in his famous Condor Trilogy. This long, multi-generational story is seen as a very important Chinese book. It is also considered one of the best “wuxia” stories ever written.

What is Wuxia?

Wuxia means “martial hero.” It’s a popular type of Chinese story with roots in old folktales. These stories are usually about skilled fighters who follow a strict code of honor. They travel through a made-up ancient China called “jianghu.” This world has powerful leaders, wandering bandits, and magical items.

To face dangers, wuxia heroes learn amazing martial arts skills. They get these skills from old writings or from wise, hidden masters. Think of it like a hero in a video game learning new special moves from ancient scrolls.

‘Legend of the Condor Heroes’ Blends History and Fantasy

The “Legend of the Condor Heroes” mixes martial arts action with important moments in Chinese history. The story takes place in the 13th century.

This was during a long war between two Chinese dynasties, the Jin and the Song. About 70 years into this war, a new threat appeared: Genghis Khan.

The Mongols were trying to conquer both empires. Raids by all sides caused chaos across the land. The story starts in a Chinese village.

Two fathers-to-be swear their unborn children will be blood brothers. They engrave the names Guo Jing and Yang Kang on daggers.

But a surprise attack by the Jurchen people separates the families. Guo Jing grows up with the Mongols. However, he stays true to his Chinese roots.

Meanwhile, the Jurchen royal family raises Yang Kang. They train him to be a cunning prince. This sets up a sad conflict between the two brothers.

The Journey of Guo Jing and Huang Rong

Jin Yong’s book follows the simple but kind Guo Jing. He is with his smart girlfriend, Huang Rong. Their adventure takes them to many places.

They visit the busy capital city of Hangzhou and the tough Mongol plains. They also go to the famous market city of Samarkand.

The heroes travel through the jianghu. They meet interesting characters and see important historical events.

As they fight bad guys, find treasure, and help solve local problems, their martial arts get better. This prepares Guo Jing for a fated fight.

Mastering Difficult Martial Arts

The novel shows over 80 different martial arts styles. Some are very realistic. Others are almost magical.

Even simple-looking moves have deep meaning. To learn a move that lets him attack twice at once, Guo Jing must first learn to draw a circle with one hand and a square with the other at the same time.

This kind of hard training challenges the characters and the readers. Jin Yong was the pen name of Louis Cha.

He was a journalist and started the Ming Pao Daily News. In the 1960s and 70s, wuxia stories were banned in China because they were seen as old-fashioned.

However, in Hong Kong, which was a British colony then, Cha could write fiction. He could also report on news from the Cultural Revolution without problems.

He worked to make the wuxia genre more complex. It was often seen as simple and not very serious.

A Celebration of Chinese Culture

“Legend of the Condor Heroes” celebrates Chinese identity. It explores China’s culture and history with real human feelings.

Even though Jin’s books were banned in mainland China, they were still read by Chinese people all over the world. Copies even made their way to the mainland illegally.

When China’s government changed its rules in the 1980s, his novels became very popular. Today, Jin Yong’s works have been turned into movies, TV shows, and video games. His books are so loved that people say, “wherever there are Chinese people, there must be Jin Yong’s fiction.”

Bridging the Gap for Western Readers

Sadly, these books are not well-known in the West. This is partly because translating them is hard.

Also, his stories require a good understanding of Chinese culture. Luckily, new English translations of “Legend of the Condor Heroes” are now available.

These translations help new readers discover this amazing saga. It’s a sweeping story about the rivers and lakes, filled with heroes and adventure. You can find the latest English translations of Jin Yong’s work online and in bookstores.
